Minor Earthquake Shakes York County, SC

LESSLIE, SC – A minor earthquake rattled residents of Lesslie, a small community in York County, South Carolina, early this morning. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 2.2 earthquake at 4:02 AM on June 11th, 2024.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 3 kilometers north-northwest of Lesslie, situated between the city of Rock Hill and the Catawba Indian Nation reservation. The tremor originated at a depth of 2.8 kilometers.

While earthquakes of this magnitude are generally considered minor, they can still be felt by people in the vicinity of the epicenter. However, no injuries or damages have been reported at this time.

The USGS recorded data from 13 seismic stations, analyzing 19 distinct phases of the earthquake to determine its magnitude and location. Despite the relatively small size of the event, the data collected will contribute to a better understanding of seismic activity in the region.

Residents who felt the earthquake are encouraged to report their experiences to the USGS through their “Did You Feel It?” program. This information helps scientists refine their earthquake detection and analysis capabilities.

Earthquakes are a relatively common occurrence in South Carolina, with the state experiencing several minor tremors each year. While most of these events go unnoticed, they serve as a reminder of the ongoing geological processes shaping our planet.
