In Health with Dr. Brian: What’s Your Excuse for not Exercising?

I don’t have time. That’s the number one reason people use for not exercising.

I have some questions:

  • How much time do you watch TV?
  • How much time do you spend cooking meals?
  • How much time do you spend scrolling the internet on your phone?
  • How much time do you spend aimlessly walking around Target, Marshall’s or the mall wondering if you’re going to buy something?

If you’re one of the many that says you don’t have time to exercise, I have a bit of homework for you that I really hope you’ll do. All it requires is a small notebook (or notes section in your phone) and a timer (again you can use your phone).

Every time you’re watching TV, cooking, playing on the internet, or in general just wasting time, I want you to set the timer on your phone. Once you’re done, make a note how long you did that for.

Still don’t think you have enough time to exercise?

You will either find a way, or you’ll find an excuse.

Every day we’re talking to people that say they are ready make a change and get healthy. They are tired of being unhappy with how they look and feel and tell us they are ready to take control of their health and fitness.

Then, when it’s time to decide to get started, they make excuses.

You see this in every aspect of life.

Health, fitness, relationships, work, sport, etc.

You say one thing, but your actions don’t match your mouth.

“You’ll either find a way, or you’ll find an excuse”

If you know me, you’ll know that I am not handy.

Tools + Me = Dangerous

So imagine my situation a few weeks ago when the power went out in my neighborhood, my car still in my garage and the emergency “pull thing” in the garage wasn’t working.

My day was filled with a number of important calls that I needed to hop on. WiFi and internet access were a must. I also didn’t want to wait for an Uber and be left without a car. I had other appointments away from home that I also needed to attend.

For a minute, I thought, “Screw it!” I’ll just cancel my stuff and wait for the power to come back on. There’s nothing I can do.

That was my “excuse” to just have a day with nothing to do.

How glorious it would be!

As shocking as it was to myself, my wife and others that know me, I decided to find a way out, that didn’t include backing my car through the garage doors.

It’s a simple story. If you’re handy, this issue would be easy. I’m just happy I didn’t lose an arm or an eye in the process.

What do you know that you need to do in order to make your life better?

What’s your excuse for not getting started?
