The American healthcare system is confusing. Pretty much anyone who has ever had to re-up their medical benefits at work, help their loved one understand a medical bill they received in the mail or has simply visited a doctors office recently would probably agree. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had someone who could help you navigate all the ins and outs being presented to you? Enter Rachel Nash and her organization, Rachel Nash Advocacy.
Rachel is a patient advocate. She’s able to help her patients understand the options being presented to them and cut through the red tape to find answers and solutions to complex health and medical problems. She has a deep understanding of the healthcare system and different providers her clients may use.
No matter the disease, she can help explain the diagnosis, break down jargon and ask questions to find the root of the problem. According to Rachel, “I’m like a dog with a bone” when speaking of her ability to ask the tough questions on behalf of her clients. Although some advocates charge as much as $400 per hour, Rachel’s rates fall well below this.
Rates for fee-for-service are $175 per hour. She also offers a package deal for $150 per hour; however, those who enroll in the package deal and mention the Tega Cay Sun will receive a discounted rate of $125 per hour.
A solution driven person, the empathy she has for her clients is the driving force that keeps her motivated to do more. Diagnosed with Graves Disease (hyperthyroidism) as a toddler, she struggled with symptoms associated with the disease including; hyperactivity, fatigue and “body shakes.” Coupled with the various additional illnesses that would frequent an already compromised immune system, you can imagine this made for a difficult childhood.
Improperly placed in learning disabled classes as a child, she found an advocate of her own once she got to high school named Margaret Lyburn. Ms Lyburn recognized that Rachel learned differently than other children. She petitioned the superintendent to teach her and her classmates algebra, something not considered standard at the time. Her outside the box teaching methods resulted in every child receiving a passing grade while helping to shape Rachel into the person she is today.
This positive experience had provided her with more confidence; however, life doesn’t always weave a straight path to success. This was certainly the case with respect to Rachel. After high school, she attended college but failed out soon thereafter. “I was 17, immature and wasn’t ready,” said Rachel.
As she entered adulthood, she got married, and started working at an airline before shifting to a call center position at Sprint. She was able to find success and worked her way up to different positions through the years. While at Sprint, she received news that she was Type 1 Diabetic, which meant that she was insulin dependent. Couple this with a bipolar disorder diagnosis, and Rachel was continuing to face headwinds from a health standpoint.
Although she had additional success working in vocational rehab, as a job coach and business development specialist, none of them fulfilled her passion. She knew in her heart that she wanted to help people. It was time for a change.
Newly divorced, back to college she went. She received an undergrad and graduate degree from Winthrop, while rounding out her education with another graduate degree in rehab counseling from MUSC. She had proven to herself and others she was more than able to pass the rigorous pursuit of higher education with flying colors.
Her first job after graduating from MUSC was with the VA in San Diego. “I wanted to work with veterans,” says Rachel. Although her empathy was on full display while working with mentally or physically broken veterans, she found out pretty quickly the VA didn’t fit her personality.
This led her to start her own business in September 2022 and Nash Advocacy was born. A humble and caring person, Rachel wants to do the heavy lifting for her clients, “I’m ok not being the smartest person in the room but I ask a ton of questions so I normally end up knowing the most when it’s all said and done.”
Rachel Nash is a woman who has faced many demons throughout her life, both physically and mentally. Some people would feel sorry for themselves or reflect negatively on what they’ve experienced. Not Rachel, “I’m proud of all my hardships, that’s what’s gotten me to where I am.”
If you’re struggling with the spider web of options presented to you by the American healthcare system, you now have an advocate. Her name is Rachel Nash. Give her a call.
Remember, she’s lived through some hardships herself, as anyone who took high school algebra can attest.
