At one point, when I worked in Uptown Charlotte, going out for lunch was pretty much a daily occurrence. A mixture of laziness, terrible spending habits and a desire to avoid being a person that eats at their desk led me to different establishments each day for a bite to eat. A healthy dose of camaraderie with my fellow office workers was a main driver as well.
As I got older, every one of the reasons I’d eat lunch away from the office died on the vine. I got significantly better with my money habits and saw eating out as a waste of my money and time. This also had to do with the fact I had less time on my hands, having risen up the ranks in the corporate world over the years. Mostly, I just didn’t see the need to have someone else make food I could prepare myself, at home, for way less. It takes quite a bit to get me excited about eating out for lunch, especially on a weekday. That all changed when I discovered Taco Tuesday at Sabor Latin Grill.
I’m fully aware that Taco Tuesday is a thing. I’m not sure how long it’s been around, but I know it’s been a saying used by many to expound upon cheap tacos offered at different places. But, how cheap? At Sabor, it’s really cheap.
My partner in crime for this little venture we call the Tega Cay Sun (Tom) had the idea to visit Sabor. Having no other opinion on where to eat, I was fine with it. Who doesn’t like Mexican food? When looking at the menu, I found the item I was most likely going to order anyway (tacos) were on sale for $1.49 each (normally $2.95 or $3.49 depending on what you order). Let me repeat that, $1.49 each! We’re not talking Taco Bell here folks. Sabor Latin Grille in Fort Mill serves up the real deal.
According to their website, Sabor was founded in Charlotte in 2013. Sabor’s founder, Dalton Espaillat, “envisioned a restaurant that embodied his home in the Dominican Republic, where the food is handmade and served from street vendors and eaten hot and fresh, right there in the bustling streets.” In my opinion, mission accomplished.
I ordered 4 taco’s ($1.49each, why not!?), 2 shredded chicken and 2 beef. I ordered the Tacos Americanos (lettuce, tomato and shredded cheese on a flour tortilla) but next time I’m trying the Tacos Autenticos (chopped onions, cilantro and a lime wedge on a corn tortilla). Both of my tacos were delicious and very filling. I’m not sure I even needed the fourth one, I ordered it because they were so cheap.
Although you have to pay for premium sides like sour cream, guacamole and pico de gallo among others, the salsa bar was free. My only complaint was the size of the salsa containers (very small, requiring multiple refills) but they no doubt do this to ensure their waste stays to a minimum. I’m not going to give them grief about that.
Don’t want tacos? No problem. Sabor Latin Grill offers up a myriad of street food options at reasonable prices. The most expensive items on the menu are a Family Meal Box for $35 and a Nacho Tailgate Box for $43. Both appear to be enough to feed any family of 4 or more with enough leftovers for the day after. Most menu items come in at well under $10, quite a deal for real food that both you and your family can enjoy.
Taco Tuesday is alive and well at Sabor Latin Grill. If we could somehow incorporate Hot Fudge “Sundays” into the equation, my mind (and waistline) may explode with glee.
