Columbia, SC (Tega Cay Sun) – The Fort Mill High School boys’ swim team won the South Carolina State Championships on October 16, 2023, despite being disqualified in the first event.
The Yellow Jackets initially triumphed in the 200-yard medley relay event, but were disqualified after a swimmer left the block too soon. However, the team rallied and won the overall state championship and the final event of the night, the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Jack Dollyhigh, Owen Fey, Turner Wiand, and Dominic Impens all swam outstanding legs in the 400-yard freestyle relay to win gold.
The Jackets also had several other strong individual performances throughout the meet. Dollyhigh finished second in the 50-yard freestyle, while Impens finished fourth in the 200-yard individual medley. Wiand, Fey, and Dollyhigh finished fifth, sixth, and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle, respectively. Fey also finished eighth in the 200-yard freestyle.
Other notable individual performances for Fort Mill included:
- Turner Wiand: 4th place in the 100-yard backstroke
- Dominic Impens: 4th place in the 100-yard breaststroke
- Adrian Paredes: 7th place in the 200-yard individual medley and 8th place in the 100-yard breaststroke
- Caden Wolf: 8th place in the 200-yard individual medley
- Zach Minnich: 9th place in the 100-yard freestyle
This victory was the third team state championship for head coach Cindy Van Buskirk, and the second in just 72 hours. It was also the first time in team history that the Fort Mill boys’ and girls’ swim teams have both won the state championship in the same year. The boys’ team also won their fifth state championship, adding to their previous victories in 2005, 2006, 2010, and 2011.
